Mourinho Defends Mbappé as Real Madrid Media Storm Grows
José Mourinho has come to Kylian Mbappé’s defence, dismissing the stories surrounding the French forward’s private life as “ridiculous” and accusing sections of the media of exaggerating minor details into a crisis. Speaking before Real Madrid’s La Liga meeting with Villarreal, the Portuguese coach said the attention had become disproportionate and urged supporters to judge the player fairly.
The controversy has included reports about Mbappé visiting a nightclub and taking part in a cycling event in Switzerland. Mourinho challenged both accounts, arguing that the stories had been presented without the context needed to understand what actually happened. His comments arrive as speculation grows over whether some fans might voice their frustration at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mourinho Says Mbappé Coverage Has Gone Too Far
Asked whether the scrutiny of Mbappé’s private life had crossed a line, Mourinho offered a blunt assessment: “Excessive? The matter is ridiculous.” He also suggested that a hostile reaction from Real Madrid supporters would suit those seeking to fuel the story.
“If an angry reaction happens from Real Madrid supporters against Mbappé, it would be a great victory for you,” he said, addressing reporters. Mourinho argued that the focus on the forward had crowded out other major football stories, including Manchester City’s legal case and wider concerns affecting the sport.
He also pointed to the continuing debate around Cristiano Ronaldo and his coach in Portugal, saying that the media often appear determined to find a fresh source of tension at Real Madrid. In his view, the club’s global profile makes it an especially attractive target for constant speculation.
Players Have Private Lives—and Responsibilities
Mourinho acknowledged that professional footballers carry responsibilities beyond the pitch. He said a player’s conduct away from football can have consequences, but stressed that players remain human beings and are entitled to make mistakes.
“A player is a player 24 hours a day,” Mourinho said, while adding that this does not remove the need for accountability. His position was that scrutiny should be based on verified information and proportionate judgment—not assumptions built around photographs or fragments of a story.
The coach also addressed his own reputation for dealing carefully with difficult questions. He said he might decline to reveal a team selection or answer a sensitive question directly, but insisted that he would not knowingly lie. That distinction, he suggested, matters when evaluating the claims being made about his squad.
Club Says Mbappé Followed His Recovery Plan
Mourinho said Real Madrid’s players had followed the arrangements set out by the club during the recent international period, whether they were representing their countries or taking scheduled rest. Players carrying injuries returned to the Valdebebas training centre for medical examinations and recovery work.
He explained that some footballers received additional time off because of their circumstances. Arda Güler, suspended for the fourth international match, was given two extra days of rest, while injured players continued to report to the club. Mourinho named Fede Valverde and Ibrahima Konaté among those whose fitness situations required close attention.
Mbappé, who has previously dealt with knee problems, underwent tests at Real Madrid and also consulted an outside specialist for a second opinion. Mourinho said the findings were consistent with the recovery programme already prepared by the club. He did not present the situation as evidence of a breach of team rules or a failure to meet professional obligations.
That clarification is important for supporters assessing the story. In elite football, injury management can involve several medical opinions, carefully controlled training loads and individual rest schedules. A player’s absence from a public training session, by itself, does not necessarily indicate a disciplinary issue or a dispute with the club.
Bernabéu Reaction and Mourinho’s Warning
When asked whether he would understand if fans booed Mbappé against Villarreal, Mourinho declined to predict how the crowd would respond. He said he respected Real Madrid supporters but hoped they would consider the full context before reaching a judgment.
He warned that any player who failed to meet the standards expected at the club—or neglected professional and civic responsibilities—would not be protected by a place on the substitutes’ bench. In that situation, Mourinho said, the player would be left out of the squad altogether.
On Mbappé, however, the coach was unequivocal. He said the forward had not failed to honour his commitments to Real Madrid and would play against Villarreal. The statement was intended to draw a clear line between the rumours circulating outside the club and the coach’s assessment of the player’s conduct within it.
Nightclub and Cycling Claims Challenged
Mourinho disputed the description of the venue where Mbappé was reportedly seen, saying it was hosting a private event during Paris Fashion Week rather than functioning as an ordinary nightclub. He also rejected reports that framed the player’s time in Switzerland as participation in a cycling race.
According to Mourinho, bicycles were simply used to travel between facilities at a hotel made up of separate accommodation units. The coach’s point was that a practical detail had been transformed into a more dramatic story through the way it was presented.
He also criticised reports involving defender Dean Huijsen. Mourinho said a story that began with the player stopping near someone’s home to send a message had developed into a claim that he was driving at 200 kilometres per hour while using his phone. He cited the example as another case where, in his view, speculation had grown beyond the original account.
A Rarely Noted Positive for Real Madrid
Amid the argument over headlines, Mourinho offered a positive update about the squad’s fitness. He said that, for the first time in a decade, Real Madrid had reached mid-October without a new injury from the current campaign. The existing injury concerns, he added, had carried over from the previous season.
That detail may matter as the club approaches a demanding stretch of domestic and European football. Maintaining player availability can be just as important as individual form, particularly for a squad balancing league fixtures, international commitments and recovery periods.
As for the Villarreal match, Mourinho’s comments make clear that Mbappé remains part of his plans. Any prediction about the game will depend on the teams’ performances on the pitch, not the noise around the forward’s private life. Mourinho’s broader message was that football coverage should distinguish between confirmed facts and embellished claims—and that fans deserve the same opportunity to make an informed judgment.
