India’s U-19 Shuttlers Reach Round of 16 at BWF World Junior Championships 2026
India enjoyed a productive day in the singles events at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026, with six players advancing to the round of 16. The young Indian badminton team delivered a blend of commanding straight-game victories and hard-fought comebacks, underlining its depth across the boys’ and girls’ draws.
Tanvi Patri led the charge with a composed performance against South Korea’s Han Bi Kim, winning 15-9, 15-9. Patri controlled the rallies and kept her opponent from building sustained momentum, securing her place in the next round without needing a deciding game. Shaina Manimuthu also progressed confidently, defeating Hong Kong’s Hong Xuan Jiao 15-7, 15-6 after carrying her strong form forward from the previous round.
In the boys’ singles, Nishchal Chand advanced with a straight-game win over Malaysia’s Kong Wei Xiang. Chand took the opening game 15-9 before closing out the match 15-11, showing steady control as the contest tightened.
Three Indian players prevail in close three-game contests
Several of India’s most dramatic singles wins came in matches that went the distance. Jagsher Singh Khangurra recovered after dropping the second game to beat Thailand’s Punnatat Prempunpong 15-11, 10-15, 17-15. The deciding game was particularly tense, with Khangurra holding his nerve to edge a narrow finish and keep his tournament run alive.
Tanvi Reddy Andluri also showed resilience in a closely fought encounter with China’s Liu Si Ya. After losing the opening game 15-17, Andluri responded with two consecutive 15-13 wins to complete a comeback. Her ability to stay composed in tight closing stages proved crucial, particularly after the match remained finely balanced through all three games.
Dev Ruparelia added another three-game victory for India, overcoming Indonesia’s Yudha Rendra Wijaya 16-14, 9-15, 15-10. Ruparelia narrowly took the first game, faced a strong response in the second, and then regrouped to claim the decider. Together, the three wins highlighted the importance of patience and recovery in junior badminton, where momentum can shift quickly from one game to the next.
Akhil Reddy Bobba was the only Indian singles player who did not progress to the round of 16. He pushed Malaysia’s Boon Le Lim in a close match but lost 13-15, 16-18. The narrow margins in both games reflected a competitive contest, even as Lim secured the result.
Mixed results for India in doubles
India’s boys’ doubles players had contrasting fortunes in the round of 32. Yogansh Singh and Aathish Sreenivas PV defeated Estonia’s Marti Joost and Rasmus Roogsoo 16-14, 15-8. After a tight opening game, the Indian pair created greater separation in the second to move through in straight games.
Pavan Suresh and Punith Suresh, meanwhile, were unable to complete a comeback against Hong Kong’s Njoto Michaelangelo and Yu Zhirui Jerry. The Indian pair took the first game 17-15, but their opponents responded by winning the next two 15-13 and 15-10. The result made for a demanding contest, with the Hong Kong duo finding the edge in the closing stages.
The girls’ doubles draw also brought one win and one defeat for India. Aanya Bisht and Angel Punera produced a convincing performance against the Philippines’ Enya Freya Edyna Almazan and Rehina Zoey Denise, winning 15-7, 15-7. Their straight-game victory gave India another positive result as the team continued its campaign across multiple events.
Diya Bheemaiah and Baruni Parshwal faced a closer test against Indonesia’s Atresia Naufa Candani and Adelia Nirul M. The Indian pair took the second game 15-12 after losing the first 11-15, but the Indonesians secured the deciding game 15-12 to advance. The match offered little room for error, with both sides working hard to control the pace and maintain pressure.
Mixed doubles campaign ends in the round of 64
India’s only mixed doubles match of the day ended in defeat. Divyansh Agrawal and Varna Prabu Anand lost 15-11, 15-6 to Hong Kong’s Cheung Sai Shing and Wing Chi Chu in the round of 64. The Hong Kong pair took the opening game and carried that advantage into the second, ending the Indian duo’s run in the event.
Momentum builds as the junior championships continue
With six Indian players through to the singles round of 16, the day’s results provide a strong foundation for the next stage of the BWF World Junior Championships 2026. The singles victories were especially encouraging because they came in different ways: Patri, Manimuthu and Chand advanced efficiently, while Khangurra, Andluri and Ruparelia had to respond under pressure.
The doubles results were more evenly split, but Yogansh Singh and Aathish Sreenivas PV, along with Aanya Bisht and Angel Punera, ensured India also recorded wins in the paired events. As the tournament progresses, the players will face increasingly demanding opposition, making consistency, tactical adjustment and composure in decisive points essential.
For Indian badminton supporters, the focus now turns to the round of 16, where the advancing singles players will look to extend their runs and convert a promising day into deeper progress at the world junior level.
