Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future back in doubt amid difficult return
Marcus Rashford’s return to Manchester United was supposed to offer a fresh start. After finding form during loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona, the England forward came back to Old Trafford hoping to rebuild his standing and become a key figure again. Instead, a frustrating run of performances, an ongoing hip problem and uncertainty around the club’s coaching plans have revived the possibility of another departure.
United’s wider struggles have added to the scrutiny. The club sit 17th in the Premier League after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, a result that intensified pressure on head coach Michael Carrick before a demanding run of fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa. In a team short of confidence and goals, Rashford’s failure to make a decisive impact has become an increasingly prominent concern.
From promising loan spells to a stalled Old Trafford comeback
Rashford’s recent loan performances had suggested that a return to form was possible. At Aston Villa, he scored four goals and supplied six assists in 17 appearances. His subsequent spell at Barcelona was even more productive: he recorded 14 goals and 15 assists across 49 matches, contributing in several attacking roles and restoring some of the momentum that had been missing from his United career.
Those performances also helped strengthen his international prospects, keeping him in the conversation for England’s plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. For Rashford, the move back to Manchester therefore represented more than a change of club. It was an opportunity to turn promising loan form into a sustained revival at the side where he had first made his name.
Barcelona were reportedly interested in retaining him, but the clubs could not agree on the financial terms. United’s demands proved too high for the Spanish side, which began exploring other options, including Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. Fenerbahce and Arsenal were also linked with Rashford, underlining that interest in his services may remain if his United situation deteriorates further.
A warm welcome, but few results on the pitch
Rashford had not featured for United since 12 December 2024, when he played against Viktoria Plzen. Despite that extended absence, his return initially appeared encouraging. He was given the number nine shirt and welcomed back by teammates, while senior defender Harry Maguire publicly backed the forward’s value to the squad.
Maguire described Rashford as a major threat to opponents and said his experience and ability could improve the team. Carrick, too, offered him a chance to re-establish himself. The expectation was that a settled role and renewed confidence could help the forward rediscover the sharpness he had shown in Spain.
That hoped-for turnaround has yet to arrive. After eight matches, Rashford has started six but has not scored or registered an assist. United have won only once in the games he has played, a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town on 30 August. Those figures do not tell the full story of a player’s contribution, but they illustrate why his return has so far fallen short of expectations.
Injury concerns deepen Rashford’s struggle
Carrick has tried to defend the forward, pointing to his movement, positioning and ability to create openings. He also said Rashford had been dealing with a minor physical issue that led to his withdrawal from the England squad, and argued that the player had not always received enough support. Carrick’s message was that continued work and improved fitness could eventually bring a reward.
However, Rashford’s involvement soon became limited. He played only one minute against Tottenham on 10 October, was an unused substitute against Leeds United and then missed three consecutive matches. The reported problem is a persistent issue around his hip that has affected him since early October. Repeated interruptions make it harder for any forward to build rhythm, particularly when he is already under pressure to produce goals and assists.
The injury also complicates the club’s assessment of his form. Rashford’s lack of attacking output is a concern, but a run of matches without full fitness offers little opportunity to establish whether he can regain consistency. For United, the challenge is to balance patience with the need for immediate improvement during a difficult season.
Coaching uncertainty could shape the next transfer decision
Rashford’s future is closely connected to the direction of United’s coaching staff. His place in the squad was supported by Carrick’s willingness to give him a role this season. If the club changes manager, a new coach may reassess the forward’s position, preferred role and long-term value to the team.
That possibility does not mean a transfer is inevitable. Rashford remains an experienced England international with a record of producing goals and assists, and his performances at Barcelona showed that he can still be effective in the right environment. But a change in the dugout could reopen discussions that appeared to have been settled when United brought him back.
The financial side will matter as well. Barcelona’s inability to meet United’s reported demands shows that any future deal would depend not only on Rashford’s wishes and the club’s sporting plans, but also on whether interested teams can agree terms. A loan, a permanent transfer or another season at Old Trafford could each become possible depending on his fitness, form and the club’s managerial decision.
Rashford transfer prediction: a defining period ahead
The immediate priority for Rashford is to recover fully and earn a consistent place in the side. United need attacking contributions, while the player needs a sustained run of games to demonstrate that his loan form was more than a temporary resurgence. If he returns fit and begins influencing matches, the conversation around his future could change quickly.
If goals and assists remain absent, however, speculation is likely to intensify—especially if United appoint a new coach with different plans. The most realistic prediction is that Rashford’s future will remain unresolved until the club has clarity over its manager and the forward’s fitness. His comeback has not yet delivered the fresh start either side wanted, but his previous performances suggest the story is not necessarily over. The coming weeks could determine whether Old Trafford becomes the setting for a genuine revival or the starting point for another transfer chapter.
