Niclas Füllkrug Matches Werder Bremen Record as Goals Fuel Germany Recall Debate
Niclas Füllkrug is turning a prolific start to the season into a record-setting story at Werder Bremen. The striker scored in his seventh consecutive Bundesliga match on Saturday, matching a club milestone set by Rudi Völler more than four decades ago, as Bremen beat TSG Hoffenheim 2-0.
Füllkrug’s 57th-minute opener was more than a routine finish. After a determined attacking move, he struck with the conviction that has defined his recent run and given Bremen a reliable focal point in front of goal. The result extended the club’s strong start to the campaign and sharpened the debate over whether Germany coach Jürgen Klopp should bring the forward back into the national squad.
A record shared with a Bremen great
Völler, who played for Werder from 1982 to 1987, scored in seven consecutive Bundesliga matches during the 1982/83 season. Füllkrug is the first Bremen player since then—and only the second in the club’s history—to match that achievement.
His scoring streak across all competitions is even longer. Earlier in the week, Füllkrug scored twice in Bremen’s 3-2 DFB Cup defeat away to Borussia Dortmund. Those goals made him the first Werder player since the Bundesliga began in 1963/64 to score in eight consecutive competitive matches. Even Völler, a World Cup winner and one of the club’s most celebrated forwards, never managed that particular run.
Füllkrug was quick to play down the record after the Hoffenheim match. “I don’t score goals to break the record,” he said on Sky, emphasizing that the team’s performance mattered more than individual milestones. He also praised Bremen’s mentality, saying the group’s character had again been excellent and that playing alongside his teammates was “tremendous fun.”
Bremen’s collective effort makes the difference
The opener gave Werder a platform, but the home side still had work to do to secure all three points. Eren Dinkci settled the contest in the 82nd minute, doubling Bremen’s advantage and ensuring the club’s attacking pressure translated into a clean-sheet victory.
Dinkci credited Füllkrug’s goal with lifting the team. When a striker scores with that level of conviction, he said, it gives the entire side energy. That influence is part of Füllkrug’s value: he is not only finishing chances but also helping set the emotional tone for Bremen’s attack.
Werder’s position in fifth place, with 15 points from their first eight matches, reflects more than one player’s form. Still, Füllkrug’s consistency has been a major factor in their promising start. A dependable centre-forward can help a team turn close games into wins, particularly when opponents defend deep or the match becomes tense. Bremen’s victory over Hoffenheim offered a clear example: one decisive finish opened the door, and another attacker completed the job late on.
A strong case for Germany—but no guarantee
Füllkrug’s club form has also renewed questions about his future with Germany. He leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with nine goals and has scored 14 times during his current streak. The 24-cap international was last included in the national setup in September 2025, but he missed several opportunities—including the World Cup last summer—before returning to form at Bremen.
Füllkrug has remained measured when discussing a possible recall. He recognizes that Germany are entering a new phase and may prioritize younger, more dynamic players. At the same time, he has made clear that he would be available if Klopp wanted him, leaving the decision to the coach rather than campaigning publicly for selection.
Klopp omitted the striker from his first squad for the Nations League matches in late September and early October. Speaking about Füllkrug’s scoring run, the Germany coach acknowledged that the forward was finding the net regularly but pointed to his age as a factor in selection. Klopp also stressed that age alone does not make a return impossible, citing Lionel Messi’s participation in a World Cup at around 39 or 40.
More immediately, Klopp welcomed Füllkrug’s return to fitness and praised how fresh he looks. The striker had dealt with physical problems, but his current performances suggest those concerns have eased. That may strengthen his case ahead of the coach’s upcoming squad announcement for the November internationals, although form does not guarantee a place in a new-look team.
What the next matches could reveal
For Füllkrug, the clearest response is likely to come on the pitch. Continuing to score, staying fit and helping Bremen maintain their momentum would give Klopp more evidence to consider. The next Bundesliga fixture against VfB Stuttgart will provide another test, with Bremen looking to protect their position near the top of the table.
From a football prediction perspective, Bremen’s recent results suggest they can be competitive when their attack remains sharp and their team spirit holds. Füllkrug’s form makes him a central figure in that outlook, but Werder’s success will also depend on contributions from players such as Dinkci and the team’s ability to defend consistently.
Whether or not a Germany call-up arrives, Füllkrug has already made his mark on Bremen’s season. He has matched a record associated with Völler, set a new club benchmark across competitive matches and helped lift Werder into the Bundesliga’s top five. The next chapter will show whether his goals can turn an impressive run into a lasting place in the national-team conversation.
