PSG Face a Defensive Dilemma Ahead of Barcelona Champions League Clash
Paris Saint-Germain’s preparations for their Champions League meeting with Barcelona have been complicated by a major injury concern. With left-back Nuno Mendes unavailable, the French champions must find a way to protect the flank that could be targeted by Barcelona’s most dangerous young attacker, Lamine Yamal.
The debate in France is no longer only about how PSG can control the match or create chances. It is also about who should be trusted to defend against Yamal’s pace, close control and ability to cut inside. French pundits have questioned whether Lucas Digne is the right replacement, while one former international has suggested an unexpected alternative: moving midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery into defence.
Nuno Mendes’ Absence Leaves PSG With a Difficult Choice
Mendes is an important part of PSG’s defensive structure. His speed and recovery runs help the team manage opponents who attack quickly down the wings, while his forward movement also gives the Paris side an outlet in possession. Losing him before a high-profile game against Barcelona therefore creates more than a simple selection problem.
Yamal is likely to be central to Barcelona’s attacking plans. The teenager can stay wide to stretch a defence, take on a full-back one-on-one or move into the half-space to combine with teammates. Whoever starts at left-back may need to make quick decisions throughout the match, particularly if Barcelona repeatedly isolate him against Yamal.
That possibility has sharpened the discussion among French football commentators. Their concern is not simply that PSG could concede chances, but that the wrong tactical choice might leave the team exposed in a decisive area of the pitch.
Jean-Michel Larqué Questions the Lucas Digne Option
Speaking on RMC’s Rothen s’enflamme, former France international Jean-Michel Larqué delivered a blunt assessment of the suggestion that Lucas Digne should fill in for Mendes. Larqué argued that assigning Digne to a direct duel with Yamal would be a risky decision, describing the proposed matchup as a form of “tactical suicide.”
Larqué also criticised PSG’s squad planning. In his view, the club should have anticipated the need for reliable cover at left-back, especially given the demands placed on the position in Luis Enrique’s system. He questioned whether Lucas Hernandez was ever a suitable alternative for Mendes and said the club’s recruitment choices had left the coaching staff with limited options at a crucial moment.
The former defender’s comments reflect the pressure surrounding elite European football. At this level, a single weakness can shape an entire game plan: opponents may repeatedly target the same channel, forcing the rest of the defence to shift across and creating space elsewhere.
Transfer Questions Surround Digne’s Role
Analyst Éric Di Meco also questioned the value of PSG’s reported €7 million move for Digne from Everton. He pointed to the player’s age and recent career trajectory, asking whether Digne should be considered a dependable option for a club with ambitions of winning the Champions League.
That criticism raises a broader issue about squad construction. A signing does not need to be a headline-grabbing purchase to be important; dependable depth can prove decisive across a long season, particularly when injuries arrive before major fixtures. For PSG, the immediate test is whether Digne can adapt quickly enough to the team’s tactical demands if he is selected.
Di Meco also recalled Digne’s involvement in a past international match against Spain, using it to underline his concerns about the potential matchup. However, a previous incident cannot determine how a player will perform years later. The more relevant questions are whether Digne is match-ready, how well he understands PSG’s defensive responsibilities and what support he would receive from the winger and central defenders on his side.
Could Warren Zaïre-Emery Be the Surprise Solution?
Larqué’s preferred alternative is Warren Zaïre-Emery, a midfielder known for his energy, strength and versatility. He believes the young Frenchman could offer the pace and physical capacity needed to compete with Yamal, while his tactical intelligence might help him adjust to a different role.
Moving Zaïre-Emery to left-back would nevertheless carry its own risks. PSG would lose one of their most dynamic midfielders from the centre of the pitch, where his ability to win duels, carry the ball and connect defence with attack is valuable. A positional switch could solve one problem while creating another, particularly if Barcelona dominate possession and force PSG to defend for extended periods.
The idea may be best understood as a contingency rather than an obvious first choice. Luis Enrique could also consider a more conservative defensive shape, ask a winger to track back consistently or provide extra cover from a central midfielder. The final decision will depend on the available personnel, the players’ fitness and the balance PSG want between defensive security and attacking ambition.
Dugarry Urges Patience With Luis Enrique’s System
Not every pundit has dismissed Digne. Christophe Dugarry, the former France forward and 1998 World Cup winner, urged observers to consider the difficulty of adapting to Luis Enrique’s approach. PSG’s full-backs are expected to do more than defend: depending on the phase of play, they may push high, move inside or help create passing angles in midfield.
Dugarry noted that Mendes himself needed time to become comfortable with the coach’s demands. That point offers a more measured perspective on Digne’s situation. A player’s suitability cannot be judged only by age or reputation; preparation, communication and the team’s collective structure can all influence how well he performs in a demanding role.
PSG vs Barcelona Prediction: The Left Flank Could Decide the Match
Any football prediction for this Champions League encounter must account for the uncertainty at left-back. If PSG contain Yamal and prevent Barcelona from creating repeated one-on-one situations, they can reduce one of the visitors’ most dangerous attacking routes. If the flank becomes isolated, Barcelona may be able to build pressure and force PSG’s defence into emergency adjustments.
The key may be collective protection rather than the identity of one defender. PSG could limit Yamal’s influence by closing passing lanes, doubling up when he receives the ball and avoiding turnovers that allow Barcelona to attack before the defensive line is organised. At the same time, PSG will need to preserve enough attacking threat to stop the match from becoming a prolonged defensive exercise.
With Mendes sidelined, Luis Enrique faces a choice between experience, versatility and tactical experimentation. Digne may get the opportunity to prove his critics wrong, while Zaïre-Emery remains an intriguing alternative. Whatever the selection, PSG’s response to Yamal—and the support provided around their left-back—could be one of the defining stories of the Champions League clash.
