Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu, along with Andhra Pradesh IT & HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, recently marked a significant milestone by laying the foundation stone for the P.V. Sindhu Centre for Sports Excellence. The ambitious project aims to nurture the next generation of India’s Olympic athletes and create a world-class sports facility in the region.
Expanding Horizons
The sprawling campus, spanning nearly two lakh square feet, is envisioned as an integrated sports and education ecosystem. Originally focused solely on badminton, the project expanded into a multi-sport initiative after discussions with AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The center will now cater to seven disciplines, including badminton, table tennis, swimming, shooting, football, basketball, and chess.
Sindhu emphasized the importance of giving equal importance to all disciplines within the facility. To prepare for the project, Sindhu and her husband extensively studied leading sports facilities worldwide, drawing inspiration from centers in Doha, Milan, and Australia. The aim is to implement global best practices in sports infrastructure and athlete development within the P.V. Sindhu Centre for Sports Excellence.
“We put our sweat and blood into it. I can confidently tell you that it will be a world-class center and an institute where people will actually be like, ‘Wow, this is what we need in our state and in the country,’” Sindhu expressed to The Hindu.
Creating Elite Athletes
Scheduled for completion by May 2028, the facility will offer children the opportunity to explore multiple sports before deciding on a discipline to specialize in. The broader goal is to create a pathway for developing elite athletes in various sports. Sindhu highlighted the significance of the project as a legacy beyond her personal achievements on the badminton court.
“Sport has given me and taught me so much. It is a big project and is not easy, but at the same time I wanted something on this scale. I want to show people that we have a lot of talent and if we give them world-class facilities, I’m sure you will see a lot of kids go on to bag medals for the state and the nation,” Sindhu shared.
Reflecting on the impact of the institution, Sindhu emphasized the role it would play in shaping future generations of athletes. She expressed her desire for the P.V. Sindhu Centre for Sports Excellence to become her greatest contribution, following her Olympic medal wins.
“India gave me the opportunity to win two Olympic medals, which changed my life. And this institution is how I carry that opportunity forward. My medals will always be my greatest honour, and I hope this center becomes my greatest contribution. Olympic medals inspire a generation, but institutions build generations,” Sindhu remarked.
