ADO Den Haag Stun PSV With Dramatic 93rd-Minute Winner
ADO Den Haag produced one of the biggest surprises of the Eredivisie weekend, coming from behind to beat PSV 2-1 with a stoppage-time header from substitute Matej Sin. The hosts made the most of a numerical advantage after PSV goalscorer Sven Mijnans was sent off shortly before half-time, turning a difficult afternoon into their first league victory of the season.
PSV had appeared in control after Mijnans opened the scoring with a superb first-time finish. But the midfielder’s dismissal changed the match, leaving Peter Bosz’s injury-hit side to defend for much of the second half. ADO equalised through a deflected Kilo strike before Sin settled the contest in the 93rd minute.
The result has significant consequences at both ends of the table. PSV missed the opportunity to move into first place and remain third, while ADO provisionally climbed to 16th in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. Feyenoord could extend their advantage over PSV to four points with a win away to Telstar later in the evening.
PSV’s Injury Problems Shape Bosz’s Starting Line-Up
Already dealing with a substantial injury crisis, Bosz had to make further adjustments to his team. Twenty-one-year-old Ayoni Santos was handed his first start for PSV on the left wing, while Dennis Man returned to the starting line-up for the first time since 23 August. The Romanian winger had struggled for form, but the shortage of available options gave him another opportunity to make an impact.
ADO began with a five-man defence and focused on staying compact, particularly before Mijnans’s red card. PSV dominated possession and pushed the home side deep into their own half from the opening whistle, though their early pressure did not immediately produce a clear-cut breakthrough.
Mijnans Gives PSV the Lead Before Turning Point
Mijnans and Man each had half-chances as PSV searched for a way through. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute, when Guus Til delivered a cross from the right. Mijnans met the bouncing ball with a clean first-time strike, sending it into the top corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Despite being behind, ADO showed they could threaten on the counter and from set pieces. Pascal Mulder tested PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovár with a sharp effort following a corner, and Jan Zamburek then fired narrowly over after receiving a pass from Kilo.
PSV’s afternoon became more complicated when Til was forced off. The midfielder fell awkwardly on his back and neck and was unable to continue, prompting Bosz to introduce Mikkel Bro Hansen in the 40th minute. Then, just three minutes later, the visitors lost Mijnans as well.
The goalscorer had already been booked for pulling Matteo Waem’s shirt. In the 43rd minute, he arrived late in a challenge on Mulder and received a second yellow card. PSV were suddenly down to ten men, and ADO had a clear opening to take control of the match.
ADO nearly capitalised before the break. Rottier found space and forced Kovár into another reflex save, although the assistant referee subsequently raised the offside flag. The incident offered a warning of the pressure PSV could expect after half-time.
ADO Take Control After the Break
Bosz responded at the interval by replacing Man with Ryan Flamingo as he tried to strengthen PSV’s shape with ten players. ADO also made three changes, bringing fresh energy into their attack for the second half. With the visitors forced to defend deeper, the home side began to spend more time in dangerous areas.
The equaliser came in the 56th minute. Kilo collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot. The effort took a deflection off Mauro Júnior’s heel, changing direction and leaving Kovár with little chance as it found the corner for 1-1.
The goal lifted the home crowd and gave ADO greater belief. Bal had an opportunity to put the hosts in front when he met a well-placed Kilo pass, but his header sailed over the crossbar. Rottier was unmarked in a promising position, making the missed chance especially frustrating for the home side.
PSV still posed a threat when they could break forward. Substitute Amir Bouhamdi struck the crossbar from distance after a quick counter-attack, offering a reminder that the visitors remained dangerous despite their numerical disadvantage. At the other end, Kovár had to intervene again to deny Jalen Hawkins.
Sin Delivers a Late Winner for ADO
As the match moved into stoppage time, ADO continued to press for a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 93rd minute, when a free-kick created one final opportunity. Rottier collected the ball inside the penalty area and sent it across towards the far post, where substitute Sin rose to head home.
The late goal completed a remarkable turnaround. ADO had trailed for much of the contest, but they adapted well after Mijnans’s dismissal, made effective use of their substitutions and kept PSV under sustained pressure. For the home supporters, Sin’s header was a dramatic reward for a determined second-half performance.
What the Result Means for the Eredivisie Race
For PSV, the defeat will raise questions about how they managed the game after going down to ten men. Their injury problems were evident, and losing both Til and Mijnans disrupted Bosz’s plans. The visitors still created a major chance through Bouhamdi, but they were unable to prevent ADO from turning their advantage into a late winner.
ADO, meanwhile, can take confidence from a result that could prove important in their fight to climb the table. Their disciplined defensive approach kept them in contention early on, while their attacking pressure after the break eventually paid off. The victory also gives the squad a timely lift after a difficult start to the season.
Looking ahead, PSV must quickly regroup, with a Champions League fixture against HAE scheduled for 21 October before an Eredivisie meeting with Heerenveen on 25 October. ADO will hope their first win can provide momentum for the matches ahead. Any football prediction about the league standings remains uncertain, but this result has sharpened the race at the top and given ADO renewed hope at the other end of the table.
