Tushar Deshpande’s Ranji Trophy Hat-Trick Puts Mumbai in Command Against Chandigarh
Tushar Deshpande marked his 50th first-class appearance with a career-defining performance, taking a hat-trick and six wickets in a single day as Mumbai seized control of their Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium. His incisive bowling, combined with a useful contribution with the bat, left Mumbai firmly positioned to pursue a decisive victory.
Deshpande’s hat-trick was not a first. The Mumbai fast bowler had previously achieved the feat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Mizoram in 2023, in an MCA Under-16 selection tournament, and during his school-cricket days with KC Gandhi School in Kalyan. That experience helped him stay composed when he found himself one wicket away from another three-in-three on the second day of the match.
A Simple Plan, Executed Under Pressure
Rather than search for a special delivery, Deshpande trusted a straightforward instruction he had received from experienced coaches. Dwayne Bravo and Shane Bond, who have worked with him in the Indian Premier League, have helped shape his approach. Eric Simons, formerly a bowling coach at Chennai Super Kings, offered advice that proved especially relevant: when uncertain, bowl the best ball at the top of off stump.
Deshpande followed that guidance for the hat-trick delivery. Chandigarh batter Dipender Kush, facing the pressure ball, edged it towards the slips, where Yashasvi Jaiswal completed the catch. Mumbai’s players erupted in celebration as Deshpande secured his place among the small group of Mumbai bowlers to take a Ranji Trophy hat-trick.
“The plan was just to bowl my best ball,” Deshpande said, describing the delivery as one aimed at the top of off stump. The moment reflected a key principle of fast bowling: a clear plan, delivered with discipline, can be more effective than attempting an overly ambitious variation.
Six Wickets and a Timely Contribution with the Bat
The hat-trick was only part of Deshpande’s impact. He finished the day with figures of six for 17, taking four wickets in a crucial stretch before adding two more. One of those came in Chandigarh’s first innings to complete his five-wicket haul, while another arrived in the opening over of the second innings, putting the visitors under immediate pressure again.
Deshpande also scored a brisk 44 while batting at No. 9, helping Mumbai build a substantial advantage. With a 351-run lead and a wicket already taken in Chandigarh’s second innings, the home side had enforced the follow-on and put itself in a commanding position. The green-tinged Wankhede pitch offered assistance to the seamers, but Deshpande’s accuracy and persistence were central to turning that help into wickets.
He described the spell as one of his best because the conditions made every delivery feel dangerous. Still, he stressed that his focus was not on the possibility of a hat-trick. His priority was to keep hitting the right areas and give his full effort—an approach that paid off across the day.
Recent Form Builds on India A Performances
The performance against Chandigarh followed an encouraging run for Deshpande with India A. In a recent series against Australia A in Puducherry, he claimed a five-wicket match haul in the first game. In the second, he showed his value with the bat, making a determined 52 as a nightwatchman in the second innings to help India A avoid defeat and secure the series.
Those contributions underline the range of skills Deshpande has developed. He is known primarily as a fast bowler, but his lower-order batting can also provide important runs when a team is under pressure. For Mumbai, that ability adds flexibility to the lineup and makes him more than a specialist wicket-taker.
Focused on Performance, Not Selection
Deshpande had hoped to be selected for India A’s tour of New Zealand, but the opportunity did not come. He admitted that the omission affected him for a day before he refocused on his cricket. His stated ambition remains to play Test cricket for India, but he says he wants to pursue strong performances rather than become preoccupied with selection decisions.
That mindset was particularly meaningful on his 50th first-class match. Deshpande wanted to make the occasion memorable, but not by forcing a milestone or chasing a hat-trick. Instead, he concentrated on contributing in every phase of the game. His six wickets and 44 runs made the landmark appearance a standout one for both player and team.
A Significant Milestone in Mumbai’s Ranji History
Deshpande became the sixth Mumbai bowler to take a Ranji Trophy hat-trick. The previous Mumbai players to achieve the feat were Jehangir Khot against Baroda in 1943–44, Umesh Kulkarni against Gujarat in 1963–64, Abdul Ismail against Saurashtra in 1973–74, Royston Dias against Bihar in 2023–24, and Shardul Thakur against Meghalaya in 2024–25.
His wider record for Mumbai highlights his consistency in the competition. Before this match, he had taken 126 wickets in 42 games at an average of around 26, while also scoring 666 runs, including a century and a half-century. Coached by his father, Uday, a former A Division player in Mumbai cricket, Deshpande has built his career through steady domestic performances and continued development.
Mumbai’s Winning Position—and the Need for Caution
On paper, Mumbai’s advantage made a major win appear likely. But Deshpande cautioned against treating the match as finished. He noted that cricket can produce surprises and that teams should not underestimate opponents based only on the scorecard. Mumbai’s immediate task, he said, was to maintain its intensity, bowl patiently in the right areas and take the remaining wickets as quickly as possible.
For supporters following the Ranji Trophy, the match also offers a reminder that domestic cricket remains a demanding proving ground. A strong performance can strengthen a player’s case for higher honours, but conditions, partnerships and pressure can shift a game quickly. Any prediction of a Mumbai victory must therefore account for the need to complete the job, not simply their commanding lead.
Deshpande’s performance has nevertheless given Mumbai a powerful platform. His hat-trick, six-wicket haul and valuable lower-order runs combined to make his milestone match memorable—and to put Chandigarh in a difficult position heading into the next day.
