Feyenoord Survive Telstar Fightback to Extend Eredivisie Lead
Feyenoord claimed a dramatic 4-3 away victory over Telstar on Saturday evening, with Sem Steijn scoring twice in a lively contest that repeatedly threatened to slip from the visitors’ control. The result delivered a fifth consecutive win in all competitions for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side and extended their advantage over PSV to four points in the Eredivisie standings.
Telstar made Feyenoord work for every part of the victory. The hosts recovered from falling behind three times, showed attacking ambition throughout the match and kept the pressure on until the final whistle. For Feyenoord, the three points were valuable, but the number of chances conceded will give Van Bronckhorst plenty to consider ahead of a crucial meeting with PSV.
Fast start gives Feyenoord early control
Feyenoord made an immediate impact in Velsen-Zuid. Just 25 seconds after kick-off, Givairo Read surged down the right flank and delivered a cross towards the far post. Gaoussou Diarra arrived to finish emphatically, giving the visitors the lead before Telstar had time to settle.
The goal was the fastest of the Eredivisie season and offered Feyenoord a dream start. Telstar, however, responded with energy rather than allowing the early setback to dictate the match. Martha and his teammates looked for space on the counterattack, while the home side began to test Feyenoord’s defensive shape.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 21st minute. Tsuyoshi Watanabe rose to meet a corner and sent his effort against the crossbar. Nacho Ferri reacted quickest to the rebound, tapping the ball into the net for his sixth league goal of the campaign. The strike moved the Spanish forward level with Eredivisie top scorer Søren Tengstedt.
Telstar answer twice in an entertaining first half
Feyenoord’s two-goal cushion lasted only briefly. Charles Vanhoutte lost possession, allowing Telstar to move forward and give Owusu an opportunity from distance. The midfielder’s swerving shot caused problems for goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, who was unable to keep it out. The goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave the hosts a route back into the contest.
Feyenoord restored their two-goal lead just two minutes later. Gjivai Zechiël produced an excellent pass to send Read into space on the right. Read then picked out Steijn, who finished from close range to make it 3-1. The move highlighted Feyenoord’s ability to exploit the width of the pitch and turn a defensive opening into a clear scoring chance.
Yet Telstar refused to fade. In the 37th minute, an attack involving Owusu left the ball loose inside the Feyenoord area. Patrick Brouwer reacted sharply and drove it home, bringing the score to 3-2. The goal ensured that the teams went into the interval separated by only one, despite Feyenoord having twice established a more comfortable lead.
Steijn’s penalty restores the two-goal margin
The second half continued in the same unpredictable fashion. Feyenoord had a major opportunity to create breathing room just after the 50-minute mark when referee Jeroen Manschot awarded a penalty. The decision followed an apparent handball by Telstar defender Soualhia, and a lengthy VAR review confirmed the spot-kick.
Steijn took responsibility and showed composure, sending the penalty home in the 57th minute. His second goal of the night made it 4-2 and gave Feyenoord a renewed advantage. The midfielder’s brace proved decisive, though Telstar’s response meant the visitors could not simply manage the game without further attacking pressure.
Van Bronckhorst made changes as Feyenoord sought greater control, introducing Javi López and Oussama Targhalline for Thijs Kraaijeveld and Vanhoutte. Telstar also adjusted, with Jelani Seedorf replacing Thórisson. The substitutions did little to reduce the intensity, as the home side continued to push forward in search of another opening.
Shenkman sets up a tense finish
Telstar cut the deficit to 4-3 in the 69th minute. Noach Shenkman connected with a well-delivered cross and guided a fine header past Ernst, giving the hosts renewed belief. It was the third time in the match that Feyenoord had allowed Telstar to close the gap after building what appeared to be a secure lead.
The final stages were consequently tense. Feyenoord had to defend with greater urgency as Telstar looked for a late equaliser, while the home crowd sensed that another comeback might be possible. The visitors ultimately held on, protecting their narrow advantage to secure all three points.
Feyenoord’s victory followed their 3-2 Champions League win over Como and came after four changes to the starting lineup. Watanabe and Kraaijeveld began in central defence, while Steijn and Diarra were also brought into the side. Jeremiah St. Juste, López, Luciano Valente and Targhalline started on the bench. Telstar coach Henk Brugge, meanwhile, left captain Jeff Hardeveld out of his starting XI.
What the result means for the Eredivisie race
The result was especially significant because PSV suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to ADO Den Haag earlier on Saturday. Feyenoord’s win therefore increased their lead over their closest rivals to four points, providing a timely boost before the teams meet in Eindhoven on Sunday, 25 October.
That upcoming fixture could have a major influence on the early title race. Feyenoord will travel with confidence after extending their winning run, but the Telstar match also offered a warning: conceding three goals and repeatedly losing control of a lead is a risk against a more clinical opponent. Improving their defensive organisation will be a key focus before facing PSV.
For Telstar, the defeat was a setback in their effort to climb away from the lower end of the table. They remain 15th, but their resilience and attacking threat provided positives despite the result. Their ability to score three times against the league leaders suggests they can trouble opponents, although tightening up at the back will be essential.
Match prediction outlook: Feyenoord will be favourites in their next Eredivisie meeting with PSV, given their four-point advantage and five-match winning streak. However, their narrow escape against Telstar makes the contest difficult to call. If Feyenoord can turn their attacking quality into a more controlled performance, they will have a strong chance of extending their lead; if not, PSV could exploit the defensive openings exposed in Velsen-Zuid.
