Frenkie de Jong Faces a Tough Barcelona Midfield Battle, Boulahrouz Warns
Frenkie de Jong may be approaching a return to action, but recovering from injury will not automatically restore his place in Barcelona’s starting line-up. Former Netherlands international Khalid Boulahrouz believes the midfielder faces a demanding fight for minutes, with Pedri among the leading contenders for a place and Rodri firmly established as the team’s first-choice defensive midfielder.
Speaking on the Dutch programme Ziggo Sport, Boulahrouz described Rodri as a player Hansi Flick cannot afford to leave out. His assessment highlights the scale of the challenge awaiting De Jong: Barcelona’s midfield is not only deep, but also offers several players with distinct qualities that can shape the team’s football and tactical approach.
Boulahrouz: Rodri’s place is secure
“As long as Rodri is there, I think that position will remain his,” Boulahrouz said. “He is an undisputed starter, and the best holding midfielder in the world at the moment. He intercepts the ball, he contributes in attack, and he leaves an immediate impact. He is the best option in that role.”
Rodri’s value in front of the defence extends beyond winning possession. A reliable holding midfielder can protect the back line, help Barcelona control the tempo and provide a safe passing option when opponents press. That combination makes the role central to Flick’s plans—and leaves little room for another player to claim it without a significant change in tactics or form.
With Rodri expected to anchor the midfield, and players such as Dani Olmo or Fermín López often providing attacking support, the remaining central role could become the focus of a direct contest between De Jong and Pedri. Other options, including Gavi and Marc Bernal, add further competition as Barcelona manage their squad across domestic and European fixtures.
Pedri and De Jong offer different strengths
Boulahrouz called the potential contest between Pedri and De Jong a “fierce battle,” while stressing that the two midfielders are not interchangeable. Both can influence a match, but they tend to contribute in different ways—an important distinction for supporters assessing how either player might fit into Flick’s system.
De Jong is often the player teammates seek when building from deep. His composure in possession, ability to carry the ball past pressure and willingness to offer himself as a passing outlet can help Barcelona move the ball out of defence. In that sense, he acts as a connector between the back line and the rest of the team, giving the side a route forward when opponents attempt to close down space.
Pedri, by contrast, is particularly effective at linking the central areas with the attacking players. His movement, awareness and passing can help Barcelona progress into dangerous positions, especially when the team needs to find a way through a compact defence. Rather than simply competing for the same job, the pair give Flick different tools for controlling possession and creating attacking momentum.
That difference could influence Flick’s selection from one match to the next. Against a high press, De Jong’s ability to receive under pressure and carry the ball may be especially useful. In a game where Barcelona need sharper combinations between midfield and attack, Pedri’s creativity and positioning could prove decisive. A coach’s choice may therefore depend on the opponent, the match situation and each player’s fitness.
Could Barcelona field both midfielders?
Boulahrouz did not rule out the possibility of De Jong and Pedri playing together. He suggested that the pair could operate effectively as part of a midfield trio, giving Flick a way to use both players without weakening the team’s structure.
Such a setup would require a clear balance. Rodri could remain responsible for shielding the defence, while De Jong helps progress possession and Pedri operates closer to the forwards. The arrangement might provide Barcelona with more control and creativity, although it would also place demands on the team’s positioning and defensive work. Against strong opponents, the midfield would need to remain compact when possession is lost.
Whether Flick chooses that solution will depend on the options available and the way he wants Barcelona to approach each fixture. A midfield built around all three players could offer technical quality and passing variety, but it would also mean finding the right balance between attack and protection. Squad depth gives the coach flexibility, yet it does not guarantee every star will start.
De Jong’s recovery is only the first step
De Jong is in the final stage of his recovery from a knee injury sustained during the World Cup, and his return will be closely watched by Barcelona supporters. His contract runs until 2029, underlining the club’s long-term commitment to him, but his immediate priority is to regain full fitness and demonstrate that he can contribute at the level Flick expects.
Coming back from a significant injury can involve more than simply returning to training. Players must rebuild match sharpness, adapt to the pace of competitive football and earn confidence in their movement. Barcelona may also need to manage De Jong’s workload carefully as he works toward regular minutes. His first appearances could therefore be gradual rather than an immediate return to a full starting role.
Reports have also suggested Flick is considering whether De Jong could be used at centre-back. That possibility would reflect the Dutchman’s comfort on the ball and his ability to help initiate attacks from deep, though it remains a tactical option rather than a confirmed plan. Any switch would depend on the team’s needs and the availability of defenders.
Barcelona midfield prediction: competition will shape selection
The most realistic prediction is that De Jong will need to earn his place over time rather than reclaim it automatically. Rodri appears to have a strong hold on the defensive midfield position, while Pedri remains a major contender for a more advanced role. Still, De Jong’s passing range and ball-carrying ability give Flick a valuable alternative—and potentially a way to build a three-man midfield featuring all three players.
For Barcelona, the competition could be an advantage if managed well. Different midfield combinations can help the team respond to varied opponents, whether the priority is resisting pressure, controlling possession or creating chances. For De Jong, the challenge is clear: return to full fitness, make an impact when called upon and show that his qualities can complement, rather than simply compete with, the players around him.
