Arunachal Pradesh Forfeit Ranji Trophy Opener Amid Cricket Association Dispute
Arunachal Pradesh’s domestic cricket season has been thrown into uncertainty, with the team deemed to have forfeited its opening Ranji Trophy Plate Division match against Nagaland. The fixture was scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 11, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the match would not take place.
The disruption extends beyond the Ranji Trophy. Arunachal Pradesh will also miss its opening CK Nayudu Trophy fixture, which was due to be played against Meghalaya from October 12. The cancellation of both matches highlights the serious impact that an unresolved administrative dispute can have on players, teams and the wider domestic cricket schedule.
BCCI Confirms Opening-Round Matches Will Not Be Played
A BCCI Cricket Operations official informed the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) that the two scheduled matches involving Arunachal Pradesh would not go ahead. GCA officials then passed the decision to the Nagaland team, which was already based in Ahmedabad, on Saturday evening.
While the Ranji fixture has been described as a forfeit, the BCCI has not yet provided a detailed public explanation of the circumstances behind the decision. The Nagaland team was told that information about Arunachal Pradesh’s future matches would be communicated later, leaving players and officials waiting for clarity on the remainder of the campaign.
“We have been informed by a GCA official that there will be no match tomorrow. It was to be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium. We don’t have further information,” a member of the Nagaland team told Cricbuzz on Saturday evening.
Ahmedabad has served as Arunachal Pradesh’s home venue for domestic cricket in recent seasons. The fact that the team was unable to take the field at its usual base underscores how the current administrative crisis has affected preparations as well as match arrangements.
More Fixtures Affected Across Two Competitions
The problems are not limited to the senior men’s Ranji Trophy campaign. Arunachal Pradesh’s first CK Nayudu Trophy match, against Manipur, was scheduled to begin on October 12 at the MCA Cricket Ground at Polo Ground in Shillong. That fixture has also been cancelled.
The team’s next listed Ranji Trophy match is against Sikkim in Nadiad from October 18. In the CK Nayudu competition, Arunachal Pradesh were due to face Nagaland at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Anand from October 19. The status of those upcoming games remains uncertain, with the BCCI expected to provide further information in due course.
For players, the cancellations could mean losing valuable opportunities to compete, develop and attract attention during the domestic season. Ranji Trophy matches are an important platform for emerging cricketers, while the CK Nayudu Trophy provides younger players with a structured route into senior-level cricket. Missed fixtures can therefore affect more than a team’s points tally: they can interrupt individual progress and reduce competitive experience.
Court Case at the Centre of the Crisis
The disruption stems from a dispute over elections to the Arunachal Cricket Association (ARCA). The disagreement has moved to the courts, where the Gauhati High Court is hearing the case and has reserved its verdict. Until the legal and administrative questions are resolved, the state cricket setup appears unable to operate normally.
According to the information available, no Arunachal Pradesh team has been selected for the opening fixtures, and the training camp traditionally held in Ahmedabad has not taken place. Without a recognised association body to oversee selection and preparation, organising a squad and ensuring it is ready for competition becomes difficult.
This situation illustrates the close connection between cricket administration and what happens on the field. A state team’s participation depends on more than the availability of players and a venue. It also requires functioning governance, authorised selectors, organised training and clear communication between the association, tournament organisers and the BCCI.
A Difficult Record in the Ranji Trophy
Arunachal Pradesh have faced a challenging path in the Ranji Trophy Plate Division. The side lost all five of its matches last season, and its overall record in the competition has been modest: across 41 matches, it has recorded just one victory. That win came against Bihar in 2022.
Those results make regular participation especially important. Teams still building experience need consistent opportunities to test their players, identify promising talent and improve through competitive cricket. A disrupted season could make that progress harder, particularly for younger cricketers who rely on domestic fixtures to establish themselves.
At present, there is no confirmed prediction about when Arunachal Pradesh will return to action or whether its next scheduled matches will proceed. The immediate focus is likely to be on the High Court’s decision and any subsequent steps required to restore a recognised cricket administration in the state. Until then, uncertainty will remain around team selection, training and the fixture list.
What Happens Next for Arunachal Cricket?
The BCCI’s next update will be important for Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur and other teams whose schedules may be affected by changes to the competition. It will also determine whether Arunachal Pradesh can resume its season once the association dispute is addressed. For now, the cancellation of the opening fixtures is a setback for the state’s players and a reminder that sound governance is essential to sustaining domestic cricket.
With the Ranji Trophy and CK Nayudu Trophy both affected, the situation extends across senior and youth cricket. A timely resolution could help restore training and selection processes, giving Arunachal Pradesh’s cricketers a chance to compete in the remaining season. Until a clear decision emerges, however, the team’s immediate future—and the fate of its upcoming matches—remains uncertain.
