Ajax vs Atalanta: Football Prediction, Team News and What to Expect in Amsterdam
Ajax have little time to dwell on their disappointing Conference League defeat to Hajduk Split. The Amsterdam club now face a demanding test as Atalanta arrive at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, offering the hosts an immediate opportunity to respond and regain momentum in the league phase.
For Atalanta, the trip to the Netherlands is another step in a period of transition. The Bergamo side are no longer led by Gian Piero Gasperini, the coach who transformed them into regular contenders in Serie A and European competition. To understand what Ajax might encounter, Voetbalzone spoke with Italian journalist Fabio Gennari, who follows Atalanta closely for outlets including Prima Bergamo.
Atalanta begin a new chapter after Gasperini
Gasperini spent nearly a decade building Atalanta into one of Italy’s most exciting teams. His side earned a place in the Champions League and regularly challenged clubs with far greater budgets. The high point came in May 2024, when Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final in Dublin to claim the first major European trophy in the club’s history. Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon was part of that celebrated team.
Gasperini’s departure soon after the triumph marked the end of an era. Atalanta appointed Ivan Juric, but the Croatian’s spell proved brief and difficult. Results fell short, the club drifted towards the middle of the Serie A table, and tensions became increasingly visible. A reported confrontation between Juric and forward Ademola Lookman during a Champions League match against Marseille added to the sense of instability. The club dismissed Juric after only a few months.
Atalanta then turned to Raffaele Palladino, who helped steady the campaign and guided the team to sixth place in Serie A, a Coppa Italia semi-final and qualification for European football. Their Champions League run ended against Bayern Munich, who won the two-legged tie 6-1 on aggregate. Atalanta’s adventurous approach in the home leg left them exposed, but Palladino defended the decision to attack rather than retreat.
Sarri’s football project still needs time
Atalanta opted not to continue with Palladino and appointed experienced Italian coach Maurizio Sarri last summer. The 67-year-old has managed prominent clubs including Napoli, Juventus, Chelsea and Lazio, bringing a clear tactical identity and a wealth of top-level experience to Bergamo.
The transition is not expected to happen overnight. Gennari says Atalanta have shown encouraging signs despite a recent 3-2 defeat away to AC Milan. In his assessment, the scoreline did not reflect the number of opportunities created. The team have scored freely in recent matches, while also producing enough chances to have added several more goals. Defensive organisation remains a concern, but the performances suggest the new project is beginning to take shape.
That mixture of attacking threat and defensive uncertainty could be important in Amsterdam. Sarri’s side may look to control possession and create openings through structured build-up, but Ajax could find space if Atalanta’s defensive lines are stretched. The visitors’ ability to turn pressure into clear chances will be one of the match’s key tactical questions.
Scamacca offers a direct route to goal
One of Atalanta’s most significant attacking options is Gianluca Scamacca. The 1.95-metre striker is familiar to Dutch supporters after beginning his professional development at PSV and later spending a short period on loan at PEC Zwolle. Following spells in Italy and England, he joined Atalanta in 2023 as the club sought a replacement for Rasmus Højlund, who had moved to Manchester United.
Scamacca combines physical strength with the ability to finish in the penalty area, giving Atalanta a different route to goal when their passing game is not enough. He has recently scored for Italy in the Nations League and found the net against Cypriot side Pafos in the Conference League. Gennari describes him as a player who has matured, although his performances can still vary. When confident and in rhythm, Scamacca can be decisive.
Ajax will therefore need to manage crosses and second balls carefully. Preventing Atalanta from supplying their centre-forward could limit the visitors’ most direct attacking option, while allowing Scamacca time and space in the box would increase the danger.
Conference League points raise the stakes
Atalanta’s ambitions this season include securing European qualification and progressing as far as possible in the Conference League. The club also want to establish a solid foundation under Sarri after several turbulent changes. Gennari says supporters understand that rebuilding takes time, but confidence remains within the club.
That makes the match against Ajax important beyond its immediate result. The Conference League league phase features six matches, rather than the eight played in the Champions League format. With fewer opportunities to recover from a poor performance, each point can have a significant effect on a team’s position and route to the knockout rounds. Gennari says Atalanta respect Ajax, but will not approach the fixture with fear.
The clubs have met in Europe before, during the 2020-21 Champions League campaign. Ajax raced into a 2-0 half-time lead in Bergamo, only for Atalanta to fight back for a 2-2 draw. The Italian side then won 1-0 in Amsterdam. Those results give Atalanta a positive historical reference, while Ajax have an opportunity to overturn the memory of that home defeat.
Ajax seek a response after Hajduk Split defeat
Ajax enter the fixture after a 5-2 domestic victory over FC Groningen, a result that offered an attacking lift following their 2-1 loss to Hajduk Split. The scoreline suggests the Amsterdam side can still cause serious problems in the final third, but it does not erase questions about consistency and defensive stability.
Gennari still regards Ajax as a major name in European football, while noting that the club are going through a difficult period by their own standards. That reputation will command respect, but Atalanta may believe there are openings to exploit if Ajax struggle to protect their back line or maintain control during transitions.
Football prediction: a competitive test in Amsterdam
This fixture looks more balanced than the teams’ contrasting reputations might suggest. Ajax have home advantage and will be eager to answer their European setback, while Atalanta arrive with dangerous attacking options and a developing identity under Sarri. The visitors’ recent goal production is encouraging, but their defensive issues could give Ajax opportunities of their own.
A cautious football prediction is that both sides will create chances, with the result likely to depend on which team handles pressure more effectively. Ajax need to turn their attacking momentum into a disciplined performance; Atalanta must combine their forward threat with greater defensive control. Neither side can afford to treat the match as routine, and the limited number of league-phase fixtures makes every mistake—and every point—count.
